If you fish, the Arkansas River through Chaffee County is a real prize. A long stretch of it carries Colorado’s Gold Medal Water label, which the state gives to waters that produce strong numbers of larger trout. The fishery here is built mostly on wild brown trout that reproduce on their own, joined by rainbow trout that Colorado Parks and Wildlife stocks. The water around Salida is known for both walk-and-wade and float fishing, with deep pools and gravel bars below town.
Gold Medal is a recognition, not a separate rulebook, so the everyday details still matter. A valid Colorado fishing license is required, and some stretches carry special rules on bag limits or tackle, such as catch-and-release or flies-and-lures-only sections. Those rules can change from one segment to the next, so the reach you fish decides what you can keep.
Access is its own piece. Much of the river runs past private land, but Colorado Parks and Wildlife holds a series of public easements and access points along this stretch that let anglers reach the water legally. Staying inside those access areas keeps you on the right side of the line.
Before a fishing day, check Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area pages and the current Colorado fishing regulations brochure for the segment you have in mind.
