A large share of San Juan County’s high country lies inside the Weminuche Wilderness, which the Forest Service describes as the largest designated wilderness area in Colorado, near 500,000 acres. It straddles the Continental Divide and protects the headwaters of the Rio Grande and San Juan rivers. Three of the area’s peaks rise above 14,000 feet: Eolus, Sunlight, and Windom.
“Wilderness” here is a legal status, not just a description. Inside the boundary, no motors and no mechanized travel are allowed. That means no cars, no off-road vehicles, and no bicycles. Drones are also not permitted over designated wilderness. Group size is capped at 15 people, and people plus pack animals together cannot top 25.
Camping has rules too. The Forest Service asks people to camp away from water, usually at least 100 feet back, and some basins have extra limits. Fire bans apply in places, so a stove may be your only legal option for cooking.
For someone settling near Silverton, this is the backcountry at your doorstep, reached on foot or horseback rather than by truck. The quiet is part of the point.
Before a trip into the Weminuche, check the current rules, fire status, and any basin-specific limits on the San Juan National Forest wilderness pages.
