Penitente Canyon lies in Saguache County near the small community of La Garita, a short drive north of Rio Grande County towns like Del Norte and Monte Vista. The canyon cuts into pale rock that draws climbers from all over. The Bureau of Land Management runs it as a recreation area, and it is best known for its many bolted sport-climbing routes on south-facing walls that can be climbed much of the year.

Climbing is not the only use. The canyon and the land around it hold a network of singletrack trails used by mountain bikers and hikers, plus camping and nearby creeks. The soft, light rock here is volcanic ash welded into stone, left behind by enormous eruptions that formed the La Garita Caldera long ago.

Why this matters if you live nearby: this is federal public land with BLM rules, not a city park. Camping spots, where you can drive, fees at the campground, and trail etiquette are set by the BLM Saguache Field Office, and they protect both the climbing and older rock art in these canyonlands. Because the canyon is reached by Saguache County roads, it helps to check the route on a map before you go.

For current rules, camping, and directions, see the BLM’s Penitente Canyon pages.
