State Wildlife Areas near Pueblo are not the same as parks
Lake Pueblo SWA and Runyon/Fountain Lakes SWA offer fishing and wildlife recreation near Pueblo, but they require a hunting or fishing license or an SWA pass, not just a parks pass.

Around Pueblo there are several spots labeled State Wildlife Area, or SWA, including Runyon/Fountain Lakes near downtown and Lake Pueblo SWA out by the reservoir. They look like nice fishing and wildlife-viewing places, and they are. But an SWA is not a state park, and the entry rules are different.
State Wildlife Areas are bought and managed mainly with hunting and fishing dollars, so access is tied to that. At these areas everyone 16 and older needs a valid Colorado hunting or fishing license or a separate SWA pass to be there, even if you are only walking, watching birds, or fishing from shore. A regular parks pass or a vehicle sticker does not cover it. Each SWA can also have its own hours and its own list of allowed activities, so what is fine at one may be off-limits at another.
Why this matters for a new resident: it is easy to assume any public-looking lake works like a park. On an SWA, showing up without the right pass can mean a ticket. The fix is cheap and simple once you know.
Before visiting Runyon/Fountain Lakes, Lake Pueblo SWA, or any State Wildlife Area, check the access rules and required pass with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
