If you want to see the country behind Pueblo, the Frontier Pathways Scenic Byway is the drive. It is one of Colorado’s officially designated scenic byways, and it leads west from the Pueblo area, out of the plains and up into the Wet Mountains and the Wet Mountain Valley. The name points to the history: this old frontier zone south of the Arkansas River was where Native American, Spanish, French, and American claims once overlapped, and historic buildings still line parts of the route.
A scenic byway is not always a fast or easy road. It can climb, narrow, and cross high ground where weather changes quickly, so it rewards an unhurried pace and a full tank rather than a tight schedule. It is a half-day outing, not a quick errand. In winter, mountain sections can carry snow and ice long after town is clear, so checking conditions first is wise.
For a new resident, byways like this are a low-effort way to learn the landscape and history around your new home, while seeing why the towns out there sit where they do.
