The Million Dollar Highway is a real mountain road, not a scenic shortcut
US 550 over Red Mountain Pass between Ouray and Silverton is a steep, narrow mountain highway that can close in winter, so it deserves planning rather than a casual drive.

South of the town of Ouray, US 550 climbs over Red Mountain Pass on its way to Silverton. People call this stretch the Million Dollar Highway. It is one of Colorado’s well-known scenic drives, but the scenery comes with a real mountain road underneath it.
The grade is steep, the lanes are narrow, and long sections have sharp switchbacks and drop-offs, with little shoulder and no guardrail in places. None of that makes the road off-limits. It does mean it rewards a calm pace, good tires, and attention to the weather.
In winter the state may close the pass on short notice. Some closures are planned so crews can do avalanche and snow work safely; others happen during heavy storms. The road is generally open the rest of the year, but conditions can change fast at this elevation.
If you live in Ouray County or visit often, the habit worth building is simple: before you head over Red Mountain Pass, check the current road status rather than assuming it is open. The Colorado Department of Transportation runs the highway, and live conditions and closures are posted on its COtrip road-conditions service.
