North Sterling is an irrigation reservoir that doubles as a state park
North Sterling State Park sits on a working irrigation reservoir northwest of Sterling, so its water level and boating season follow rules you should know before you go.

Northwest of Sterling, North Sterling State Park gives Logan County a big stretch of open water for fishing, boating, and camping. It helps to remember what the water is there for.
The reservoir is first an irrigation supply. Colorado Parks and Wildlife runs the recreation, but the water is stored and delivered for farms downstream. That means the lake level can rise and fall with the irrigation season and the year’s water supply, so a shoreline you remember from one summer may look different the next.
It also means boating is not open every day of the year. The park sets a boating season, and the lake closes to boats for part of the cold-weather months. Fishing access and the open part of the season are worth checking before you load the boat or plan a camping trip.
None of this is a knock on the park. It is just how a recreation lake on a working irrigation reservoir behaves on the Eastern Plains.
