To launch a boat on Trinidad Lake, plan for an inspection first

Trinidad Lake State Park allows boating, but motorboats need a pre-launch inspection for aquatic nuisance species, so showing up with a boat is not the same as being ready to put it in the water.

Trinidad Lake sits in a state park just west of Trinidad, formed where the Purgatoire River is held back by a dam. It is a popular spot to fish, paddle, and run a boat, with a seasonal ramp on the lake.

If you plan to launch a motorboat, build in time for an inspection. Colorado checks boats for aquatic nuisance species, things like zebra and quagga mussels that can hitch a ride from one lake to another and are very hard to remove once they take hold. Before you can launch, the boat needs to pass a pre-launch inspection at the ramp, and you also need current registration and an aquatic nuisance species stamp.

This is not red tape for its own sake. One contaminated boat can change a whole reservoir. So the inspection protects the water you are about to enjoy and the next lake you visit. Arriving with a clean, dry, drained boat makes the check go faster.

Inspection hours, ramp seasons, and fees change with the calendar and the water level. Before you trailer a boat to Trinidad Lake, confirm the current rules and ramp status with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Trinidad Dam was built for more than recreation, and the lake level shows it

The dam that holds back Trinidad Lake is run by the Army Corps of Engineers as a multipurpose project for flood control, irrigation, and recreation, so the reservoir is managed to handle high water, not just to keep a full lake for boats.
