Interstate 25 runs through Trinidad and then climbs south to Raton Pass at the New Mexico state line. It is a main route, but it is also a high pass, and it can hold weather that the lower ground around it does not.
In winter, the pass can see snow, ice, blowing snow, and strong wind. Conditions can turn quickly, and at times the state will require traction devices or chains, slow traffic down, or close the road until crews can clear it. Because the pass straddles two states, a closure on one side affects travel for the other.
For someone who lives in or travels through Las Animas County, the practical habit is simple: before heading south over Raton in the cold months, check the road first instead of assuming a clear forecast at home means a clear pass. Carry what you would need if you got held up.
Colorado posts current conditions, traction rules, and closures through CDOT and the COtrip service. Check those before you drive Raton Pass in winter, and remember New Mexico runs its own road reporting for the south side.
