Independence Pass closes for the winter, so plan around it
State Highway 82 over Independence Pass, the high route between Twin Lakes and Aspen, closes seasonally for winter, so the drive that works in summer may not work in the snow.

One of the prettiest drives out of Lake County runs west from Twin Lakes over Independence Pass on State Highway 82, dropping down toward Aspen. In summer it is a spectacular high-mountain route. In winter it is closed.
This is a planned seasonal closure, not a surprise. The pass is very high and steep, with tight switchbacks and avalanche-prone slopes, so the state closes it for the snowy months and reopens it in the spring once crews judge the road safe. The exact dates move from year to year with the weather, which is the whole point: do not count on a specific opening day.
For anyone living in or moving to the area, the takeaway is simple. The map shows a short hop to Aspen over the pass, but for much of the year that route is gone, and the trip means a much longer drive around. Build that into your thinking about commutes, appointments, and visitors.
Because the dates change every year, check current conditions before you rely on that route. The Colorado Department of Transportation posts seasonal closure information, and its COtrip road conditions site shows the live status of Independence Pass.
