Sweetwater Lake is reached the long way, up the Colorado River Road from Dotsero

Sweetwater Lake is a natural mountain lake in the White River National Forest, up in the high country north of Dotsero. The Forest Service, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and a local land trust are partners at the site, and a possible state park has been part of the conversation — though the Forest Service says the lake’s future management is still being decided. For Eagle County, the connection is the drive: getting there is part of the story.

There is no quick route. From I-70 you exit at Dotsero, in Eagle County, then drive up the Colorado River Road and turn off onto the Sweetwater Creek road, a long stretch of back road before you reach the lake. That distance keeps it quiet, and it means you should arrive prepared, with a full tank and supplies, not expecting services at the end.

On the water, the rules are gentle. Only small electric motors are allowed; gas-powered motors are not. The lake is stocked with trout, so it draws anglers and small, quiet boats more than powerboats. Because plans for the site are still taking shape, facilities and camping can be limited.

Before heading out, check the Sweetwater Lake pages on the White River National Forest site for the current road, facility, and access status, since this area is still changing.
