On a ridge above Golden, a short drive from Denver, sits one of the most-visited spots in the Denver Mountain Parks: the grave of Buffalo Bill.
Lookout Mountain is a Denver Mountain Park, and it is where the showman William F. Cody, known as Buffalo Bill, is buried, with a small museum nearby that tells his story. The mountaintop also gives a broad view east over Denver and the plains, and west toward the higher peaks.
Getting there means driving a winding road that climbs the foothills, with tight curves and steep grades, so take it slow, especially in winter when ice can form. The site is on Denver-owned land even though it sits above Golden in the foothills, so park rules come from Denver Parks and Recreation.
Why care: it is a quick history stop with a big view, and it is a good first taste of how the Denver Mountain Parks reach far beyond the city.
