Sanchez Reservoir sits in the southern part of Costilla County, toward the New Mexico line. It is a State Wildlife Area, which is not the same as a state park. State Wildlife Areas are run by Colorado Parks and Wildlife mainly for fishing and hunting, and each one has its own list of what you may and may not do.
At Sanchez, the focus is warm-water fishing. There is a boat ramp, restrooms, and camping. One rule here stands out: public access is prohibited except while fishing. In plain terms, this is a place to come and fish, not a general park for picnics, swimming, or wandering. Firing a gun or shooting a bow is also not allowed at this site.
Like other State Wildlife Areas, everyone 16 and older needs either a valid Colorado hunting or fishing license or a separate SWA pass just to be on the property. If you bring a boat, the state’s boating and aquatic nuisance species rules apply too.
Before you visit, check the current rules, species, and any seasonal notes for Sanchez Reservoir on the Colorado Parks and Wildlife page for this State Wildlife Area.
