Every June, when the snowpack melts and the Arkansas River runs high and fast, Salida holds a river festival with a memorable name: FIBArk.
FIBArk stands for First in Boating the Arkansas. History Colorado traces it to 1949, when Salida held its first boat race down the river during the spring runoff. It started small, simply called the boat race, and grew into a full festival of paddling competitions and town events. That history makes it one of the longest-running whitewater festivals in the country.
The timing is not an accident. The festival lands during peak snowmelt, when the river through town carries the most water and the biggest waves. That is also the part of the year when the Arkansas is busiest and most powerful, which is worth respecting whether you are racing, watching, or just living nearby.
For a new resident, FIBArk is a clear sign of how central the river is to Salida’s identity. The town did not just grow next to the Arkansas; it built a yearly celebration around the water itself.
Event dates and details change year to year, so confirm the current schedule with the official festival source. For the documented origin in 1949, see History Colorado’s account of the early FIBArk race.
