Eldora: Boulder County's Hometown Ski Mountain

Past Nederland sits Boulder County's only downhill ski area, a compact mountain with surprising bite, a strong Nordic center, and an uncertain new future under possible town ownership.

Published June 10, 2026 - Last verified June 15, 2026

Most Front Range skiers point their cars west toward I-70 and the big resorts. Boulder County has its own, and it’s close: drive up Boulder Canyon, through Nederland, and you reach Eldora, the county’s only downhill ski and snowboard area. It sits about 18 miles from town, which means you can ride a few runs and still be back for lunch.

Eldora is compact, around 680 acres and 53 trails, but it carries more bite than its size suggests. Roughly a third of the runs are rated most difficult, and the wind-scoured terrain off the top can humble people who expected a beginner hill. The Nordic Center is part of the draw too, with about 40 kilometers of groomed trails for classic skiing, skate skiing, and snowshoeing, which Eldora calls the closest Nordic center to the Front Range.

There’s a community-ownership story unfolding here. The town of Nederland has moved to buy Eldora from its current operator, with town trustees approving the purchase in early 2026 and a multi-year transition planned. The hope is to keep a beloved mountain locally controlled.

One practical note: the access road and lots fill on powder days, so carpooling, the RTD bus from Boulder, or an early start all help. Check conditions, lifts, and parking at the official source before you go: eldora.com.
